I was super excited to finally read this one with Izzy; it has all the makings of a really great middle grade novel – three friends on a perilous quest, a spooky doll, eerie dreams, etc.
But really it was just good not great. It was more dreary than creepy. The story is really about the pain of growing up and moving on from childish things – which is all well and good, but it kind smacks the reader over the head and bogs down the whole story.
I’m making it sound worse than it is. It is an engaging enough story and the characters are well-drawn as are their complex pre-teen concerns. I guess I was just expecting more after all the hype, the awards, etc.
